Hello friend,

I live about a block away from the local bakery, which is rather dangerous. Keep in mind that a block in Sicily isn’t the same as a block in a city like New York, London, or Sydney. It’s as if it is directly around the corner.

I go out my front door, turn right down the street, and, in a hop, a step, and a jump, and I’m there. I open my windows in the early morning, and I can smell baking croissants.

Apart from bread, croissants and other related breakfast treats are the bakery’s main focus. Sicilians usually grab a quick breakfast on the way to school or work. At the cafe, it’s accompanied by an espresso. In fact, if you aren’t quick enough, you’ll miss out on a cornetto, as they are usually gone by 8 a.m.

The cornetto is the Italian equivalent of a croissant, which is usually filled with some deliciously flavoured cream, from custard to Nutella and any type of marmalade.

I’ve always loved having a sweet breakfast as a treat: pancakes, waffles, or a croissant and cappuccino, and I’m in heaven. I can’t say I’m a sweet tooth, but I love it for breakfast. It must be the Italian in me.
